公元2307年，地球的化石燃料枯竭了。经过将近半个世纪的建设后，建成了全长5万千米、以3条轨道升降机为中心的太阳能发电系统。为了建造出这个能制造半永久能量的巨大建筑物，世界形成了3个巨大的国家联盟：以美国为中心的“世界经济联盟”，通称UNION；以中国、俄罗斯、印度为中心的“人类革新联盟”；新欧洲共同体AEU。由于轨道升降机过于巨大，防卫变成了十分困难的任务。但各国军队依然为了自己的威信与繁荣进行着大规模的zero-sum game（任何一方都得不到好处的竞争）。这样的世界，要为其花上句号的组织出现了——拥有机动战士高达的“天人”私人武装组织。他们为了消除世界的纷争，展开了超越民族、国家、宗教的作战行动。高达驾驶员刹那•F•清英决心改变这个世界。In the distant future, mankind has used up all of its fossil fuels, forcing them to turn to Solar Power as an alternate energy source. As a result, this causes a rift to form between richer and poorer nations, eventually leading to war. In the midst of this conflict, a mysterious military group known as "Celestial Being" aims to use force to bring peace to the world, by using special humanoid weapons known as Gundams.
